Huawei and UP Engineering celebrated its collaboration in a virtual meeting on February 4. UP Diliman Chancellor Fidel Nemenzo, UPCOE Dean Ferdie Manegdeg and UPERDFI President Ferdz de la Cruz thanked Huawei for sponsoring eight scholars in their final two years of studies starting this AY 2020-21.

Huawei Philippines VP Mr. Daniel Guo and Senior HR Director Ms. Jade Caopei (who zoomed in from China) explained the rationale for the company’s investing in developing engineering talent, citing their goal to employ 6,000 engineers by 2026.

ED Tito Aliga shared a little history of the relationship, which started some time in April 2019 when Huawei visited Engineering to discuss the recruitment program. Discussions however developed when Huawei Recruitment Lead Hazel Quinonez brought up to Management what Tito cited as a very Asian practice: “Plant-Nurture-Harvest”. Recruiting graduates was likened to coming for the harvest. Yet, because of the presence of deserving yet less-resourced students, their urgent need for help to enable them to graduate was taken up.

This concept has now been adopted by recent scholarship donors, many of whom have signed up for a 4-year guaranteed support.
