UPCOE Dean Rizalinda de Leon and UPERDFI President Chato Calderon completed the US Roadshow with the San Francisco leg on October 17 at the Philippine Consulate in SF. The UP Alumni Association of San Francisco (UPAASF), headed by Chairman Gabby Moraleda organized the event.

We thank UPERDFI and BEFAAA Member Vic Villagracia for hosting. Having always been a generous donor of UPCOE, Vic gave a motivation talk on the need to support the college. He also explained the non-traditional ways of donating through marketable securities and wills and how several in the audience have already pledged their commitment in this manner. There were about 40 UP alumni and friends from SF, Sacramento and Davis. UPAA Sacramento and Vicinity was represented by Treasurer Johnny Regadio.
CE alumna Johanna Wong suggested that we should make donations easy for the donors. The US schools donations are conveniently done through the website.

Some attendees commented that the next step is to spread the message. They are planning to re-echo the presentations to the other members of UPAASF, UPAA Sacramento and Vicinity, and Tau Alpha Fraternity Alumni Association in America, and to mobilize their support for UPCOE.

The distinct flavor of the UPAASF Event comes from the Open Forum, detailed in Gabby Moraleda’s post: “It was pretty clear during the open forum that the Philippines is lagging in research and product development. It is alarming to hear where we stand and frustrating because the countries that are ahead of us, their managers — got educated in UP! A travesty. There is a need for the FilAm alumni to step up, lead, if not leapfrog science education, innovation and research in UP if we seek for the country to be globally competitive. Time is not on our side. If we don’t take action soon, we will simply be perpetually stagnant and remain at the bottom of the region. And, should we fail to respond, our very nature and belief that we are graduates of the best university will be a distant (if not a disastrous) dream. In the end, our UP education will be meaningless. Paging UPAASF engineers and scientists.” |
