The UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc. (UPERDFI) is a non-stock, non-profit foundation established in 1972. It mobilizes support for the University of the Philippines College of Engineering’s resources: faculty, students, infrastructure; and orchestrates projects that address pressing problems of the country.

The UPERDFI R&D Grants aim to deliver science-based solutions to address real-world problems by enlisting faculty and students of the UP Diliman College of Engineering to undertake projects that contribute to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals.

  • For UPD COE faculty
  • Technology development and strategic studies
  • Maximum grant amount: Php 1.5 Million

Diliman Integrated Technical Consultancy, Inc. Research Grant

  • For UPD COE/NGSE faculty, undergraduate and graduate students
  • Support for basic or applied research
  • Maximum grant amount: Php 400,000

UPERDFI Startup Grants

  • For startups
  • Seed funding to help become investor-ready
  • Maximum grant amount: Php 360,000

Undergraduate Student Prototyping Grant

  • For UPD COE undergraduate students
  • To enable students to prototype their capstone projects
  • Maximum grant amount: Php 100K

Graduate Research Grant 

  • For UPD COE NGSE graduate students
  • Support for their Master’s thesis
  • Maximum grant amount: Php 50,000

UPERDFI Technology Development and Strategic Studies Grant

About the Grant:

The UPERDFI TDSS Research Project Grants are from the interest earnings of the TDSS Fund established in 1993, to support research projects with national relevance.

Grant Objectives:

The UPERDFI TDSS Research Project Grants aim to support research and development, prototyping, piloting, reverse engineering, and technology adaptation leading to the commercial use, application or utilization of a product, process or technology, the creation or generation of new industries, an increase in economic activity, improvement in productivity, enhancement of technological capability and advancement in the technological level of the country.

The TDSS Fund also supports strategic studies which could aid decision-makers and policy-makers, both in the public and private sectors in areas where engineering and technology are key components – whether as an input or a key result area.

Eligibility:

  • Open to research projects led by UPCOE Faculty
  • Projects must be aligned with the TDSS Fund Objectives

Amount: up to PHP 1,500,000.00


Diliman Integrated Technical Consultancy, Inc. Research Grant

About the Grant:

The DITCI Research Grants are provided by the Diliman Integrated Technical Consultancy, Inc., a consulting firm established by engineering professionals who are mostly UPCOE professors and alumni.

Grant Objectives: 

The DITCI Research Grants aim to support to research teams in subjects that seek, formulate, disseminate and apply engineering concepts, practices, and products that enhance national development.

Eligibility:

  • Open to research teams led by UPCOE Faculty or Students
  • Research projects must align with DITCI Research Grant Objectives

Amount: up to PhP 400,000.00


UPERDFI Startup Grants

About the Grant:

The UPERDFI Investment in Startups comes from the Innovation Grants Fund pump-primed by multiple donors – Frederick Chua (Magellan Solutions), Marcelo Casillan, Jr., Raul C. Villanueva, Accenture, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation, Focus Global Inc., Manila Water Company Inc., McCann and CCA Manila.

Grant Objectives:

The UPERDFI Investment in Start-ups aims to provide financial support to ideators that need assistance in their commercialization initiatives. Beyond funding, UPERDFI also aims to match start-ups with potential mentors from the UPERDFI membership roster and industry network.

Eligibility:

  • Open to start-ups led by UPCOE Faculty, Students or Alumni
  • Must have potential industrial or societal impact and must make use of technology
  • Preference will be given to start-ups that also address societal issues
  • Funds cannot be used to pay for personnel services
  • Activities for which funds will be used should be toward making the startup more investor ready. Examples are:
    • Improvements to the existing product
    • Field testing activities
    • Pilot production and market testing
    • Customer acquisition
  • Application must include the following:
    • Latest pitch deck of the company
    • Report on the current status of the venture
    • Plan, timeline and line-item budget for the amount being requested
    • Expected results

Amount: up to PHP 360,000


Undergraduate Student Prototyping Grant

About the Grant:

The UPERDFI Student Project Grants are from the funding entrusted by INTEL Philippines with UPERDFI to support UPCOE.

Grant Objectives:

The UPERDFI Student Project Grants aim to provide financial assistance in the prototyping of engineering projects of students that have a potential benefit for industry and society.

Eligibility:

  • Open to projects led by UPCOE Students
  • Preference will be given to projects that also address societal issues or specific industry needs
  • Must have potential industrial or societal impact and must make use of technology
  • Funds granted can only be used for prototyping. Examples of allowable expenses: purchase of components, raw materials, supplies, small tools and small equipment; payment for services related to prototyping

Amount: up to PHP 100,000


Graduate Research Grant 

About the Grant:

The Graduate Research Grants are from the donations of Dr. Daniel C. Peckley, Jr. and Kingson Management and Development Corporation.

Grant Objectives:

The grants aim to help graduate students in covering expenses related to their master’s thesis.

Eligibility:

  • Open to graduate students enrolled in the National Graduate School of Engineering
  • Preference will be given to those with financial need (i.e., full-time, no scholarship)

Amount: up to PHP 50,000
